Southchip launched the latest synchronous buck-boost converters SC8742B & SC8746

2025-03-25
Southchip announced the launch of its new high-efficiency synchronous buck-boost converters SC8742B and SC8746, which integrate low-side MOSFETs. Both new products adopt Southchip's fourth-generation buck-boost architecture, achieving higher performance under light-load conditions and smoother transitions between buck and boost modes. SC8746 also supports high-side current sensing, further enhancing system flexibility. SC8742B and SC8746 are compatible with the latest PD3.1 protocol, supporting power requirements of 100W/20V and 140W/28V. They can be applied to fast-charging functions in platforms such as monitors, docking stations, and splitters, extending Southchip's product portfolio in the fast-charging domain.

Compatible with PD3.1 Protocol to Meet Higher Power Charging Demands

As the latest fast-charging standard, the PD3.1 protocol has expanded the power supply range of the USB Type-C interface, increasing the maximum power from 100W to 240W. This provides more robust electrical support for high-power devices such as laptops, gaming laptops, and workstations, offering users a faster, more efficient, and safer charging experience. SC8742B and SC8746 are fully compatible with the PD3.1 protocol and can be applied to 100W and 140W high-power fast-charging applications, helping hardware engineers develop high-power fast-charging applications under the new standard more quickly.

Product Highlights

Based on Southchip's fourth-generation buck-boost architecture, SC8742B and SC8746 achieve better performance under light-load conditions, including lower output voltage ripple, as well as reduced standby and shutdown currents. This effectively minimizes system power consumption when the device is not charging. Additionally, these new products offer higher efficiency, which can help mitigate the heat generation issue in high-power scenarios for end devices.
Other key advantages of the products include:
  • Improved thermal performance and dynamic load performance
  • Support for the I2C interface for more flexible system control
  • Integrated low-side MOSFET to save PCB space and enhance system integration
  • The buck-boost architecture allows equal input and output, providing more flexible input configuration
  • SC8746 supports high-side current sensing to ensure output signal integrity
  • Available in a 3mm x 5mm QFN package with strong compatibility

Conclusion

The two new products launched by Southchip further strengthen our product capabilities in the high-power ranges of 140W and 100W, helping customers quickly iterate new products and explore the new market of high-power fast charging.
